What to do during "World’s Week"

Apr 07, 2022

Not everyone will be in Belfast or Killarney this upcoming week (us included!) but quite a lot of dancers who are at home during ‘Worlds Week’ will have no classes or very few classes as their teachers are over in Ireland.

Quite often dancers deal with this time at home differently - for some it motivates them and spurs them forward towards their goal, for others it can make them feel deflated and down as they see their friends and teammates at the Worlds.

There’s no right or wrong way to react but there is definitely one way which is more helpful to YOUR dancing than the other.

This week the MWM Team got together to come up with ways that we can help you to feel motivated, upbeat and productive during your time at home during Worlds Week.

The first thing we all agreed on was goal setting. You have to have a goal, otherwise how do you know what you are working towards?

Re-evaluating your goal during this week is a fantastic time to be able to take the time to sit down properly and have a real think about what you want to achieve in the next 12 months. Where would you like to be in 12 months time? Where would you like to be in six or three months time, that will help you to reach your 12 month goal? How will you achieve these goals?

Maybe it could be a nice idea to turn those goals into a vision board or a colourful mind map to stick up in your bedroom or practise area to remind you of your goals everyday. This should help to keep you motivated and inspired to work hard. If you choose to do this please share your vision boards with us, we can’t wait to see your creativity.

Aoibheann suggested that you all find one thing specific to work on. Does your teacher always correct your posture? Do you know one of your weaknesses is your turnout or toe height? Well now is the perfect time to do something about it! The sooner you start the sooner you will start to see improvements.

We recommend spending 5 - 10 minutes at the start of your practise and 5 - 10 minutes at the end of your practise spending time doing stretches which will help turn your weaknesses into strengths. The MWM Instagram page and The MWM Club are both full of ideas of classes and specific movements that will be able to help you with a range of weaknesses - you can check it out here (https://www.instagram.com/movewithmegg/ & https://www.movewithmeg.co.uk/store). The classes in The MWM Club Class Library are all labelled with the areas of dancing that they are focused on so why not use our 7 Day Trial and learn how to improve alongside us (https://www.movewithmeg.co.uk/pl/2147598779). Try this 3 - 5 times a week and keep tabs on how much you have improved in the next six weeks.

Another huge thing you can do during Worlds Week to help your dancing is taking a break from the dancing world. Sometimes it can be quite overwhelming to be part of the dancing world - there are classes multiples times a week, feis' almost every weekend and practice to do at home. So, spend some time with you friends from school, go to the cinema, see your family, eat some Easter eggs, enjoy the sunshine (if we are lucky enough to get any), catch up on revision or homework, do some art, learn a new form of dance, write a story, draw a self-portrait, walk the dog more than normal…the amount of things you can do are endless. Let us know what you’re up to, we love to hear from you all.

Remember to support your friends and teammates who are in Belfast or Killarney. Cheer them on, say good luck and be proud of them no matter what. Everyone has their day to shine - yours is coming.
