The Power of Fun in Your Irish Dancing

Feb 20, 2025

Is Irish Dancing fun for you at the moment?

No, this isn’t a trick question to start this blog, we are serious! More and more at Move With Meg we are finding that at certain times of the Dancing year, the pressure becomes so intense that the fun is sucked out of Dancing - and this is something we are passionate about changing!

Why Does Pressure Build?

Whether you’re preparing for a major competition, striving for a new goal, or simply trying to keep up with your competition, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. High expectations we have for ourselves and intense Dancing schedules can sometimes overshadow the joy of dancing. But here’s a little reminder - Irish Dancing was fun when you first began your Dancing journey and that spark is still in you, waiting to shine.

Signs You Might Be Losing the Fun Factor

It’s normal to experience ups and downs in your Irish Dance journey, but there are a few signs that things might be getting too intense:

  • You dread going to class rather than looking forward to it.
  • You find yourself focusing more on what you’re doing wrong rather than celebrating your progress.
  • You feel tired or burnt out, even when physically rested.

If any of these resonate, it might be time to hit the reset button and rediscover what makes dancing so special for you.

Tips to Bring Back the Joy

💭 Remember Your Why

Remember why you started Irish Dancing in the first place. Was it the thrill of performing, the fascination with the rhythm, or the challenge of learning new choreography? What is your Why for working so hard at Dance class?

🎯 Set Fun Goals

Not every goal has to be (and shouldn’t be!) about winning. Try setting goals that simply make you happy - like learning some choreography from your favourite professional show or going to a Dance Camp or MWM Fest this summer to make new Irish Dancing friends.

👐 Mix Things Up

Change your practice routine - add a fun warm-up, dance to your favourite tunes, or incorporate some of our MWM Gold Club challenges.

💬 Talk About It

Speak openly with your teacher, friends, or family about how you’re feeling. Sometimes just sharing your thoughts can help relieve the pressure you are experiencing and those around you can help you to bring back the fun in your Dancing journey.

🎊 Celebrate Small Wins

Acknowledge every step forward, no matter how small. Progress is progress! Meg’s personal favourite. Sometimes seeing the progress in your dancing takes a while, so make sure you’re tracking some smaller factors and celebrate the progress in those. (Like our Before and After photos in our 1-1 Coaching sessions or our MWM Gold Club Challenges)

At Move With Meg, we believe that Irish Dancing should be fun. It’s okay to take a step back, reflect, and refocus on why you love to Dance. Remember - your best performances often come when you let go of expectations and simply have fun.

If you need support on your journey to rediscover the fun of Dance, we’re here for you! Let us know how you’ve brought back the fun or joy to your dancing, you could help other dancers too.
