Why Your Relationship With Your Dance Teachers Matters
Feb 13, 2025As an Irish Dancer you spend countless hours perfecting your steps, drilling technique, and striving to achieve that next big goal. But have you ever stopped to think about how important your relationship with your Irish Dance teacher is in helping you achieve these goals?
Your teacher isn’t just the person or people who tell you to point your toes more or to jump higher in your reel; they’re a mentor, motivator, and often a trusted confidant. Here’s why having a positive and respectful relationship with your teacher is one of the best things you can do for your dance journey.
They’re Your Personal Irish Dance Guide
It’s easy to feel like your teacher is only there to assess what you’re doing wrong or to tell you everything you need to improve; after all, their job is to give you feedback so you can get better at dancing. But remember: their goal is the same as yours. They want you to succeed. Your teacher’s corrections and advice are there to help you become the best dancer you can be. When you approach their feedback with an open mind and a willingness to grow, you’ll see how much they’re rooting for your success.
Trust and Communication Are Key
A good relationship with your teacher is built on trust. This means feeling comfortable asking questions when you don’t understand something or expressing concerns if you’re struggling with the choreography. Open, respectful communication helps create an environment where you feel supported and understood - and where your teacher knows how to best help you succeed.
Mutual Respect Goes a Long Way
Just like you deserve to be treated with kindness and respect, your teacher does too. Show up to class ready to learn, listen carefully, and always give your best effort. When you respect your teacher’s time and expertise, it builds a strong foundation for mutual respect. This respect isn’t just about following rules—it’s about recognising the hard work your teacher puts into helping you grow as a dancer.
They’re Part of Your Personal Feis Team
Irish dancing can be tough - there will be days when you feel frustrated, tired, or unsure of yourself. Your teacher can be a powerful source of encouragement during those moments. When you have a good relationship with them, they’ll understand what motivates you and how to lift you up when you’re feeling down. Remember, they’ve likely been in your shoes and know how hard it can be - use their experience and guidance.
Parents, You Can Help Too
For parents, supporting your child’s relationship with their teacher is essential. Encourage open communication and a positive attitude towards feedback. Avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your child or criticising the teacher in front of them. A united front between parents and teachers helps dancers feel more confident and secure in their own little Feis Team.
Ultimately, your Irish Dance teacher wants to see you succeed, but they can’t do it alone. By working together, you can forge a relationship that makes your dancing journey not only more successful but also more enjoyable. We know this from experience - both Meg and Annabelle are still friends with their very first Dance Teachers (even though Meg’s teachers now live in America and Annabelle’s first teachers are no longer Irish Dance teachers!). So next time you’re in class, remember your teacher isn’t just there to teach steps…they’re there to help you shine.
